How to use Reading Time
- Paste the material to be read or choose a supported local file.
- Select a preset or enter a reading speed between 50 and 1,000 WPM.
- Use the exact duration and 250-word page estimate to plan the experience.
Supported behavior
Reading Time Calculator turns a word count into a transparent duration instead of hiding the estimate behind a rounded label. Choose a reading speed from 50 to 1,000 words per minute, or use the careful 150 WPM, average 225 WPM, and fast 300 WPM presets. The exact result follows word count divided by speed, multiplied by 60, and is shown in minutes and seconds; a rounded summary remains secondary. The tool also estimates pages at 250 words each, which is useful for rough planning rather than print layout. Zero words produce zero seconds, and sub-minute results remain visible as seconds. Word detection follows the toolkit’s Unicode-aware counting rules, so the duration is not based on a simple whitespace split. Your draft or selected text file is read and calculated entirely in the browser, with no copy sent to a timing service. Actual reading varies with language, complexity, formatting, and reader familiarity, so adjust the speed to model your audience.
- The page estimate assumes 250 words per page and does not model typography or illustrations.
- The duration does not account for diagrams, code, unfamiliar vocabulary, or individual comprehension.
Examples
Fifteen words at 225 WPM
One two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen.
Result: 15 words; 4 seconds; 0.06 estimated pages
Forty-five-word article opening
Readers need clear context before they can evaluate a proposal. This short sample explains the goal, names the intended audience, describes the main constraint, and closes with a practical next step. It is long enough to demonstrate a visible duration without requiring a full article.
Result: 45 words; 12 seconds; 0.18 estimated pages
Common use cases
- Add an evidence-based reading-time label to an article.
- Compare careful and fast review times for documentation.
- Estimate how much written material fits a study session.
Frequently asked questions
What speed is used by default?
The default is 225 words per minute, with 150 and 300 WPM available as careful and fast presets.
Can I enter my own reading speed?
Yes. Values from 50 through 1,000 WPM are supported.
How are partial minutes displayed?
The exact estimate retains minutes and seconds; the human-readable rounded summary does not replace it.
Does page count match a printed book?
Not necessarily. It is a planning estimate of one page per 250 words, independent of layout.
